A Message from Our CEO: The Dream for a New Era of Ageing in Cameroon

From Service to Legacy: The Evolution of RECEWAPEC

For years, RECEWAPEC has stood as the voice for the disadvantaged and vulnerable elderly. Today, we are standing at the threshold of a historic transformation. My dream—our collective dream—is the transition from RECEWAPEC to the RECEWAPEC Foundation.

This is more than a change of name; it is a shift in philosophy. We are moving toward a future where Senior Citizens are not merely passive recipients of care, but independent, self-reliant pillars of our society.

The Pillars of Our Advocacy

We believe that the wisdom of our elders should not be sidelined, but woven into the fabric of our nation’s governance. To achieve this, our goal is clear: The establishment of a National Council for Ageing Persons in Cameroon.

This Council will serve as the engine for change, focusing on:

Political Representation: Lobbying the government to elect independent Senior Citizens to both the Lower and Upper Houses. Who better to defend the issues of the elderly than the elderly themselves?

Legislative Action: Ensuring that a National Policy for Older Persons is not just drafted, but enacted into law and rigorously implemented.

Executive Leadership: Advocating for the creation of a Ministry of Senior Citizens, led by a Minister dedicated solely to the welfare and rights of the elderly.

A Call to the Youth: Supporting Your Future Self

To the young men and women of Cameroon, I say this: What you are today, we once were; what we are today, you shall become. Ageing is a fundamental truth from which there is no escape. We do not say a child is “one month young”—we say they are “one month old.” From the moment we are born, we are all growing older. Supporting aging policies today is not just an act of charity for others; it is an investment in your own tomorrow. By building a world that respects the elderly, you are building the world you will eventually inhabit.

Old age is a crown of thorns for those who have no support, but a crown of glory for a nation that honors its roots.

Our Commitment

RECEWAPEC remains the unwavering voice of the vulnerable. We will continue to lobby, advocate, and dream until every senior in Cameroon can live with independence, represented by their peers and protected by the state.

Join us in making this foundation a reality. Let us honor the past to secure the future.

Prince Bengha Martin Ngochia, CEO RECEWAPEC

RECEWAPEC successfully advocated and United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), supported Cameroon Government financial and technical assistance to develop a Draft National Policy on Ageing. This policy was validated in Kribi in 2010 through a multi-stakeholder process.
However, despite its validation, the policy has not yet been officially released, and to be enacted into law for promulgation/ implementation.
In line with the United Nations global process and the GAROP “Age With Rights” Global Rally, RECEWAPEC is currently tying or seeking possible ways to mobilize resources to engaging state authorities, older persons themselves, Members of Parliament, and Senators for the Policy to release officially and ensure that this policy is tabled in the Lower and Upper Houses to be enacted into Cameroon law, and promogated for implementation nationwide.
For RECEWAPEC, this effort reflects our commitment to advancing a rights-based approach to ageing, ensuring dignity, protection, and inclusion of older persons, and aligning Cameroon with global standards on the rights of older people.

Our Strategic Move: Empowering Others to Lead

At the heart of RECEWAPEC’s new strategic plan is a transition from a project-based NGO to a Grant-Making Foundation.

Our New Funding Mandate: We are shifting our focus to identify and fund high-impact initiatives that support ageing persons. Our pillars for this transition include:

Capacity Building: Strengthening local associations dedicated to elderly welfare.

Direct Funding: Providing grants to organizations that provide healthcare, social protection, and dignity to the elderly.

Global Reach: While our roots remain in Cameroon, the RECEWAPEC Foundation aims to fund projects across the continent and beyond.

RECEWAPEC’s interventions at global policy centres

We’ve been working with and for old age people throughout Cameroon since 1996 as RECEHWEDEV and from 2001 as RECEWAPEC, helping aged persons, especially the poor and vulnerable to cope with crises and shocks, get favorable laws enacted to improve on their well being, invest in their productivity and health to living an active aging life.
